How do I choose a food photographer?
October 19, 2023How do I choose a food photographer?
An honest and very truthful top 3 tips on choosing the right food photographer for you and your business.
Do your research & think on budget
Cost is one of the most significant factors when it comes to choosing the photographer for you and your business, but that said, it shouldn’t ever be the deciding factor. Choosing a photographer based on the price tag won’t always leave you with images you love and that reflect the story that you are trying to tell.
While doing your research is important, deciding on a photographer you love before knowing their prices can sometimes end in heartbreak, hence why it’s always best to set a budget beforehand or have a figure in mind. Always remember that when choosing your photographer, you are paying for quality, style and experience.
Choose a style you like
Every food photographer will have their own style, whether studio lit, bold and slightly more saturated, or naturally lit, dramatic and storytelling. I always advise looking through a photographer’s portfolio first; that way, you will get a feel for how they work, their style and edit, and look at a few, get a feel for how different people work and how their style has developed or perhaps changed slightly for other food shoots.
Suppose you feel an instant connection with a particular photographer that resonates with you and your business and fits within your brand and the story you are trying to share. In that case, you have found the photographer for you and your business! Food photography is more than just a plate of food; it’s a craft and a story. Therefore, it’s crucial to encapsulate that.
Do they come recommended?
Testimonials are important, and can end up swaying your decision. Generally, photographers will have reviews on their websites or social platforms. It’s also lovely to put pending customers in touch with previous customers or brands I have photographed; this gives them an insight into what it’s like to work with me.
Do your research, and go with your heart - it’s often right!
